XVIII Olympic Games Tokyo Japan 1964

It is my great pleasure, privilege and honored to express briefly about the Olympic Games. I am one of the 4Boxers and 2Marathon Runners representative first time in History Nepal participated in the XVIII Olympic Games in Tokyo Japan 1964.May I talk about briefly the Olympic Games from Athens to Tokyo?

According to the Olympic Games history, On June 23, 1894,a meeting being held in a lecture hall of Sorbonne University. In Paris unanimously approved a suggestion that the ancient Olympic Games should be revived in modern form. The man who made the proposal was a Frenchman, the Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and the congress was called by the first International Olympic Committee (IOC). Two years later the first modern Olympic Games began on April 1 in Athens – close to the birthplace of the Olympics. Under the modern Olympic system, the host provides facilities for a wide range of sporting events which are participated in by leading athletes from every part of the world. The number of countries sending representatives to the Olympics is steadily growing and for 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the number of participating nations reached 93 for the first time in the 68 year span which marks the history of the modern Olympics.

The First 25 years or so of modern Olympic history may be regarded as a gestation period during which the Games evolved from the International equivalent of a high school sports meeting to something approaching their present form. The 1st Athens Olympics were participated in by 285 athletes from 14 countries. Only ten track-and-field and swimming events were represented. The Greek shepherd who won the first modern marathon become a national hero – feted in restaurants and presented with free service in stores and barbershops. With   its close links to Greek history, the marathon has always been the star event of successive Olympic meetings and it remains this position today. The first Olympic marathon of the modern era was won in the time of 2hrs. 58mins.50 secs. The 2nd Olympics opened the 20th century in Paris and 3rd were held in St. Louis, United States, in 1904.The 4th were held in London in 1908 and the 5th  in Stockholm in 1912. Each successive Olympiad saw more nations and more athletes participating. The 6th Olympics, which were to have been held in Berlin, were cancelled because of the outbreak of World War!. The 7th Olympiad was held in Antwerp. The 2nd Olympics were held in Paris, but were overshadowed completely by a giant international exposition being held at the same time. The marathon race, which wound through the twisted street of the old city, was won by a bakery delivery boy whom many still suspected of taking a short cut. The St. Louis Olympics were almost entirely an American affair – only 66 foreign athletes participated. There was also a sensational incident in the marathon event when it was found that the winner had accepted a lift in an automobile during the race. It was the London Olympic of 1908 which really put the Olympic Games on the International map for the first time. More than 2,000 athletes from 22 countries participated. Again, the marathon was marked by an incident, when the winner collapsed just before finishing and was helped across the line by officials. He was disqualified and the man who came second was declared the winner. The marathon almost invariably is the most colorful event in the Games. In the Stockholm Olympics, a runner died after passing the finishing line. The Olympiad was also notable for being the first in which Japan participated.

The Modern Era (1924 – 1960) – Paris to Rome

The 8th Olympiad was held in Paris, the 9th in Amsterdam, the 10th in Los Angeles, the 11th in Berlin. Thus, the Olympics had been held only in Europe or North America although the participation and number of events had increased to present – day level. Because of financial problems and lack of modern air transport, however, there were limits on the number of athletes which could compete in prewar Olympiads. The Berlin Olympiad was the biggest held before war and it had 4,000 athletes from 49 countries participating. The 12th Olympics had been scheduled for Tokyo, but had to be suspended because of World War II. The 13th Olympics were similarly cancelled because of War and it was not until 1948 that War – torn London played host to 4,500 athletes from 59 countries – about half the independent nations of the World at that time. The 1952 Helsinki Olympics had a special significance because they marked the reentry of the countries defeated in World War II in the International Olympic arena. This meant that Japan once again competed in the Olympic Games. In 1956, the history of the Olympics took another important turn when the Games were held in Melbourne. It was the first time that an Olympiad had ever been held in a country outside the America or European continents. Carried by  a world – wide network of airlines,3,5oo athletes from 67 countries  participated at Melbourne. In the 1960 Rome Olympics, this figure was almost doubled to 6,000 participants from 84 nations. The marathon was won by barefooted Abe be from Ethiopia – vivid proof that victory the world, but could be grasped by all humanity.

The XVIII Olympic Games 1964 Tokyo Japan was the first ever held in Asia.
