The Silas (Precepts) In Buddhism

 

           Silas (precepts) in Buddhism denote to the rules of conduct and discipline established by the buddha .silas is not an end on it self but a means by the practice of which Nibbana (enlightenment) is attained easily silas is practiced  voluntarily .

       That is why it should in no sense be taken as the commandment there is no one who enforces or implements  sila as a commandment or law.

           Silas denotes simply to the training . rules (sikkhapada) which we practice for the happiness of our own as well as of other.

             Buddhism has prescribed there deferent kinds of silas for deferent levels of Buddhism the five percepts (panchasilla) are the basic moral codes prescribed for all. There are eight and ten percepts  (Astasilla and Dasasilla) which are prescribed for the Buddhist disciples of high level or order. A close analysis is sure to reveal how the observance of these percepts help to lesson our greed .hatred and delusion –the root cause of all kinds of evils in society.

              The panchasilla (five percepts) can be practiced by everybody ,everywhere and every time .According to Buddhism one who  practiced panchasilla has never to take to the rebirth in woeful state.

             The five percepts are the basic foundation of Buddhist ethics which could be pursued and practiced by all in their daily life . the observance of these percepts in daily life softens the heart of the practitioner and makes him a  compassionate one. This percept tries to lay down a firm foundation where peace ,harmony ,prosperity, equality could be fostered properly, as one.

             Thinks ones own happiness ,so should one thinks of other happiness too . to say in other words one should not commit or perpetrate any kind of evils either towards oneself or towards others . it behooves that the five percepts be practiced and pursued  very strictly.

            The observance of five percepts wilily help to eliminate civil unrest, power tussle racial discrimination from the present world.   The successful cultivation of these precepts creates an inner sense of tranquility ,stability, security and strength unto the cultivator . and these are the virtues necessary as pre-requisites for developing various mental faculties  leading up to enlightenment (Nibbana).

                                        Pali verse

                  Buddha and take refuge in triple gem (triratna) while venerating the Buddha  they recite the following verse.

 Pali verses:- “Namotassa Bhagavato Arahato sammasambuddhassa”.

 English version:- Homage to him the exalted the worthy, the fully enlightened one .

            Thereafter they take refuge in triple gem by reciting the Following verses.

 Pali verses:- Buddham saranam gacchami

                     Dhammam saranam gacchami

                    Sangham saranam gacchami

 

                   Dutiyampi Buddham saranam gacchami

                   Dutiyampi Dhammam saranam gacchami

                       Dutiyampi Sangham saranam gacchami

 

                   Tatiyampi Buddham saranam gacchami

             Tatiyampi Dhammam saranam gacchami

                   Tatiyampi Sangham saranam gacchami

 

 English version:-

                               I go to the Buddha for refuge.

                               I go to the Dhamma for refuge.

                               I go to the Sangha for refuge.

 For the second time too I go to the Buddha for refuge .

For the second time too I go to the Dhamma for refuge.

For the second time too I go to the sangha for refuge.

 

For the third time too I go to the Buddha for refuge.

 For the third time too I go to the Dhamma for refuge.

 For the third time too I go to the sangha for refuge.

All these verses are recitated in pali language that too, by following after the recitation of the Buddhist monk.

 

 Five precepts (panchasilla)

 The  panchasilla  prescribed by  Buddhism for the lay people may be given as.

 Pali verse:-

        A:- panatipata –veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami.

        B:-Adinnadana –veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami.

       C:-Kamesu –micchacara veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami.

        D:-Musavada –veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami.

        E:-Sura-meraya-majjappamada-ttana-veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami.

  English version:-

 A:- I undertake the training percept to abstain from taking life.

 B:- I under take the training precept to abstain from taking what is not given (stealing).

 C:- I under take the training precept to abstain from sexual misconduct.

 D:- I under take the training precept to abstain from false speech.

 E:- I under take the training precept to abstain from taking intoxicants.

            The lay disciples or the ordinary people  promise to observe these precepts voluntarily by reciting them before a Buddhist monk.
